According to a recent report from Football Insider, Crystal Palace are interested in re-signing Yannick Bolasie from Everton. The DR Congo international made the move to Goodison Park from Selhurst Park back in 2016 after impressing in the capital, only for things to go wrong on Merseyside to eventually see him loaned out to Championship outfit Aston Villa at the start of the current campaign.
But with that temporary stint cut short earlier this month, the winger’s future appears far from certain, although a recent report from Football Insider suggests that Roy Hodgson’s men are eyeing up a move to bring Bolasie back to the London club.
However, such have been the 29-year-old’s struggles in recent times, the Eagles must forget about a January move for Bolasie, and should instead go after his Everton teammate Ademola Lookman, who himself has been linked with a move away this month (as per The Daily Star via HITC).
Ultimately, Bolasie enjoyed a great first few months upon arrival at Everton to thus maintain the fine form he produced at Palace that earned him the move to Goodison Park, with the winger scoring once and laying on four assists in 13 Premier League games before sustaining a ligament injury against Manchester United in December 2016.
That left him on the sidelines for just over a year, yet the DR Congo star simply hasn’t been able to rediscover his best form since then in scoring just once for the Toffees in the second half of last season, before failing to appear at all in Marco Silva’s first three league games in charge to plunge his future into doubt.
And while a move away to Villa appeared to be exactly what was needed to get Bolasie back to his best, that simply didn’t happen as Dean Smith’s men cut short that loan spell earlier this month – clearly, the 29-year-old is a far cry away from the player that ripped things up regularly at Palace.
Yes, returning to Selhurst Park might be the inspiration needed to get Bolasie back to his best, but it would be a huge risk to trust in the winger to produce his best form – a much better option would be to go after his Everton teammate Lookman.
Unlike Bolasie, the 21-year-old has struggled to deliver in the Premier League since moving to Everton back in January 2017, but one mustn’t forget the excellent loan spell he had at Red Bull Leipzig only last year to suggest that he is beginning to find his feet and produce some of his best football of his career.
The attacker netted five goals and laid on four assists in just 11 appearances for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men in the second half of last season to further underline his undoubted talent and potential – there’s a reason the new Southampton manager wants to reunite with him at St Mary’s (as per The Daily Star via HITC).
And at the tender age of 21, there is a more long-term focus in landing Lookman as opposed to Bolasie, while it’s even arguable that the younger winger would be a shrewder option in the present as well – and with Wilfried Zaha linked with a move away recently (as per Bild), Hodgson may need a long-term replacement for his talismanic figure.
And while Bolasie’s return would likely be well received by Palace fans, his struggles post-injury suggest that Hodgson should forget about a move for the 29-year-old, and instead seek to land his Everton teammate Lookman this month.
