Crystal Palace narrowly defeated Grimsby in the FA Cup to progress in the competition but must remain focused on signing a striker in the coming weeks.

The Eagles had 30 attempts on goal against the League Two side, but only found the back of the net once, highlighting the need for more firepower. Roy Hodgson’s side have been overreliant on Wilfried Zaha in the Palace attack and have sorely missed Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham. With their place in the next round secure, the former England manager can once again start his search for a new goalscorer.

Palace were linked with a move for England U21 international, Dominic Solanke, however concerns over fitness meant the move was scrapped and the youngster instead joined Bournemouth for £19m. Jermain Defoe was also considered but Rangers won the race for the former England man.

Instead, Palace should make a move for Willem striker – Fran Sol. Valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard is a graduate of the Real Madrid youth academy, making a handful of appearances for their reserve teams before being sent on loan. He eventually moved to Holland back in 2016 and has been a top performer in the division for a number of years now.

Sol scored ten goals in his debut season with the club and improved upon his tally in the season after, finding the back of the net 16 times. Unsurprisingly, the 26-year-old has continued his impressive form into the current campaign, scoring 13 Eredivisie goals in only 17 appearances so far. Signing players from the Dutch league is always a risk, but there have been many occasions when the risk has paid off.

Sol is approaching the prime of his career and has a proven record over the last few years – this move could be worth the gamble.
