Crystal Palace fans here in the Tavern are desperate for their side to dip into the free agency market, as the current goalkeeping situation has them fearing the worst.
Indeed, Palace’s season is beginning to derail at the most crucial of times in terms of their Premier League survival, as injuries continue to take their toll on any progression being made at Selhurst Park. And, after hearing news of the recent injury suffered by ‘keeper Julian Speroni, it’s left them lacking heavily in the goalkeeping department. However, Roy Hodgson is now looking to a last resort, as according to reports in the Sun, Hodgson is eyeing up a swoop for free agent Diego Cavalieri.
The Brazilian is a free agent after cancelling his contract with Fluminense, and is now able to join the Eagles as a much-needed addition. Indeed, an option that Palace look like taking up in quick time, as Wayne Hennessey is currently the only fit senior ‘keeper in their ranks.
The 35-year-old is a former client of Hodgson from his time at Anfield with Liverpool, so the Englishman is well aware of what the shot-stopper is able to bring to his Palace side. And, with bags of experience at both a domestic and international level, the goalkeeper will provide not only the required cover for Hennessey but will also force for some healthy competition.
Diego Cavalieri never managed to make it during his last stint spent in the Premier League, meaning that this could just be nothing more than a back-up addition for Palace. However, they can be satisfied with the possibility of securing a much-needed recruit in the goalkeeping department, as a relegation battle is often lost due to a lack of depth within sides.
