Crystal Palace secured their first win without Wilfried Zaha for the first time in two years against Leicester at the weekend.
Roy Hodgson lost his talismanic winger to suspension with the Eagles losing their previous 13 league matches without him in the side. Both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half, but it was Palace who broke the deadlock when Luka Milivojovic beat Kasper Schmeichel with a wonderful curling effort from 25-yards. Palace were able to hold on to their slender advantage and move five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Despite beating the Foxes, Palace sorely lacked Zaha’s influence in attack. Jordan Ayew and Andros Townsend looked void of ideas at times, and the Eagles rarely looked threatening in attack. Although Christian Benteke is nearing a return to fitness, Hodgson should be looking to add to his forward options in the upcoming January transfer window.
The man who should top his list of targets is Leyton Orient sensation – Macauley Bonne. Valued at just £90k by Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old has hit the ground running for the O’s since joining from Colchester United last summer. Bonne ended his debut campaign at his new club with a fantastic return of 25 goals in all competitions.
Eager to prove he is not a one-season wonder, the youngster’s incredible showings have continued into the new season. Once again, Bonne has been a constant menace in front of goal, scoring 17 goals in just 24 appearances in the National League Premier. His performances have not gone unnoticed with Bonne attracting plenty of interest from clubs all over England, with less than a year remaining on his deal, Orient could be forced to cash in.
Bonne would provide Hodgson with a natural forward and lessen the goalscoring burden on the shoulders of Zaha. Available on the cheap, Palace have nothing to lose with this move.
