Palace should seek Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden as part of possible Andros Townsend deal

According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden has handed in a transfer request. The 23-year-old only made the move to St James’ Park back in 2016 and played a key part in their promotion-winning campaign of 2016/17, before going on to help Rafa Benitez’s men avoid relegation from the Premier League last term in their run to tenth place in the table.

Yet the Englishman has cited family reasons for his decision to leave the North East, and with the Magpies themselves reportedly keen on a reunion with Andros Townsend, Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace should demand £6.3 million-rated Hayden (as per Transfermarkt) as part of the deal.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the 23-year-old has excelled at Newcastle in the last two years in featuring 67 times for Benitez’s side, 33 of which coming in their run to the Championship title back in 2017.

And with 26 Premier League appearances last term, it’s clear that the former England Under-21 international was a key part of the squad at St James’, and as such will certainly be a blow if and when they lose him this summer.

But with Benitez’s men reportedly seeking a move for Palace’s Townsend, and Hayden reportedly seeking a move down south, Hodgson’s Eagles must seek to include the 23-year-old as part of any deal taking Townsend the other way.

While it would obviously not be a like-for-like replacement, Hayden would give Hodgson another viable and accomplished option in the middle of the park ahead of the 2018/19 season, and at the tender age of 23, he is only likely to get keep improving and get better the more football he plays.

And with Palace slightly lacking in the central midfield department following the departure of Yohan Cabaye at the expiration of his contract, alongside the injury to Jason Puncheon, Hayden could well come in as a first teamer at Selhurst Park, which based on his efforts for Newcastle last term certainly wouldn’t prove to be too much of an issue.

Yes, replacing Townsend will obviously be of concern to Hodgson given how influential he was for the Eagles last term, but with Hayden reportedly seeking a move down south after Newcastle, a deal could well be struck which sees Townsend go to the North East, and Hayden make the move to the capital.
