Potential consequences: Crystal Palace lose Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried Zaha’s impact on this Crystal Palace side has caught the eye of one of Europe’s elite.

Zaha may not be setting the Premier League alight like he did so last season, however, his effect on this Palace side is still remarkable.

The 26-year-old has the ability to create something out of nothing, whether that be scoring, assisting or winning a penalty which can single-handedly turn a game on its head to the benefit of the Eagles.

His impact on Roy Hodgson’s side has not gone unnoticed. Sky Sports News have reported that Borussia Dortmund have expressed their interest in the forward and initial talks have been held between Dortmund and Zaha’s representatives.

In the case that Zaha was to move on, let’s take a look at the potential consequences…

Christian Benteke’s time to step up

If Palace’s main man is to leave Selhurst Park, they will need someone else to step up to the plate as even if a remarkable new signing is brought in, they may take time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League.

That man could be Benteke.

Considering he has only just returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury it is likely to take the Belgian time to get his match sharpness back.

However, if he is able to do so and start to replicate the form from his first season at Palace where he scored 15 goals in the League, that will only boost his confidence, allowing him to impact games more positively and starting to take the main goalscoring onus once again in Palace’s side.

A relegation battle could be on the cards

The Guardian reported that Palace could demand over £50m, a significant sum generated that can be invested into various positions that need depth.

However, if Palace fail to find a suitable replacement out wide that can have a similar impact to Zaha’s and are unable to bring in the suitable level of players to add quality and depth across the pitch, they could find themselves in a tricky situation down at the bottom end of the table.

The relegation battle is able to alter so quickly that if Palace cannot invest the money well, they may find themselves in and amongst it before they know it.
