Crystal Palace: Chris Wilder shares praise of Wilfried Zaha

Crystal Palace: Chris Wilder shares praise of Wilfried Zaha - Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have had a mixed campaign so far and the form of Wilfried Zaha this season arguably epitomises their fortunes – offering much promise but not always delivering when expected.

The Eagles have produced some decent results such as a recent draw against Manchester City at the Etihad as well as a win at Old Trafford, but disappointing outings in the past few games have increased the threat of relegation, with the point gap to the bottom three down to six points.

In 2020 alone, Palace have lost three out of four home games, despite coming up against Championship side Derby as well as Southampton and Sheffield United, and worryingly they failed to score in each of those matches. Chris Wilder, whose Sheffield United side were the visitors on Saturday, remains a fan of the winger. He suggests (via Football.London) that he is worth “£90 million” and is amongst the best players in his position in the Premier League, yet his numbers are somewhat concerning despite the praise.

Roy Hodgson’s side are the lowest scorers in the league with 22 goals from 25 matches and a key reason for that has been the inconsistency of Zaha, who has only three goals and four assists to boast of in 2019/20. Indeed, it looks like he could fall some way short of the 20 goal contributions he made in the league last term, therefore, and that could mean that a decision will be made regarding his future soon, with his manager expecting interest to arise in the summer.

While the Cote d’Ivoire international is still as consistent with the ball at his feet, making 4.8 dribbles per game – the second-highest in the league – he doesn’t have enough to show from his efforts.

Is Wilfried Zaha destined to leave this summer?

Definitely

Definitely

No way

No way

One key pass and just 1.4 shots on target per game, per WhoScored, indicates that he is less effective in the final third than what is required of him, and until he improves in that aspect of his game it is likely that the Eagles will continue to falter in terms of scoring goals.

Is Zaha worth £90m? Or has he performed below par this season? Let us know your thoughts Palace fans…
