This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.
Like most modern-day full-backs, Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt is an individual who offers so much to his team in defence and going forward.
Bearing that in mind, it is no surprise to see the 29-year-old’s market valuation go up, even if it is just the slight increase. According to Transfermarkt, having been £9m last June, his market valuation is now slightly higher after rising to £10.8m. You could, though, forgive Crystal Palace supporters for arguing that he is actually worth more than that.
As already alluded to, Van Aanholt is a full-back with both defensive and attacking qualities. Despite being a defender, he averages the joint-most key passes per league game in the Eagles’ squad with 1.1 (minimum of five games, via WhoScored).
He has also scored three goals in the Premier League this term, the same amount as Wilfried Zaha, really putting into perspective the attacking threat he brings to Roy Hodgson’s squad.
How much is Patrick van Aanholt worth?
£10m or more
Less than £10m
The above does not mean that the Netherlands international has neglected his defensive duties, though. He is currently making 1.5 interceptions per league game, an average only one defender in the Palace ranks can beat, Joel Ward (1.6).
When Crystal Palace signed Van Aanholt from Sunderland back in 2017, then-manager Sam Allardyce used the word “instrumental” to describe him following his contribution to the Black Cats’ successful survival bid the year prior (per BBC Sport). Looking at some of his performances this season, again, he seems to be just that.
