The word ‘reshaping’ has flown around the Tavern like a drunken pigeon lately, its been everywhere. Two of the teams that we have repeatedly been told are planning to ‘reshape’ this Summer are Liverpool and Chelsea, and both are at the forefront of this story.
At the other end of the footballing spectrum, Wigan have problems of their own and it is one of their star performers, James McCarthy, that is being linked with the high flyers. Whether the Lancashire side are relegated or not it appears there will be bids for the dynamic midfielder at the end of the season.
McCarthy began his footballing career as a teenager with Hamilton in the SPL and he made his debut at just 15 when he come on as a substitute against Queen of the South. Shortly after turning 16, McCarthy had a trial with Liverpool and was in fact offered a deal on Merseyside, however he chose to stay in Scotland thinking that first team appearances would be more beneficial to his career.
He stayed with the side until 2009, and then he made the move to Wigan in the Premier League before the 09-10 campaign in a deal worth £1.5million. During his time with the Lancashire side he has looked very impressive and there have been reports at numerous points suggesting that he may be on the move to a bigger club.
It is thought that Chelsea made an offer for the player in January only to ultimately fail, and now Liverpool want to compete to sign him after they missed out on him all those years ago.
Both sides are going through a period of rejuvination and the signing of young talent will only aid that. Currently both sides could do with some fresh legs in their midfield, perhaps Liverpool more so but he would be an asset to either club. In previous weeks Liverpool have appeared keen to sign Blackpool midfield maestro Charlie Adam, whether their rediscovered interest in McCarthy mean that their hopes of signing Adam have diminished remains to be seen, but it does show a good commitment to youth talent.
It is believed that Chelsea are willing to pay £7million for the player and it is expected that Liverpool will have no problem matching that bid, meaning the player could have to pick between the two this Summer.
He has been labelled as an extremely classy midfielder with a bright future ahead of him for a while, and when it comes to moving this Summer he has to make the right choice. He needs to be playing games, and it is for that reason that I believe Anfield may be a better choice because there is less competition for places than there is at Stamford Bridge.
Ultimately though it is down to Wigan and the player, but whether they survive or not I would be surpried if McCarthy was still there next season.
