As covered in a story earlier this week I wrote about Liverpool showing interest in Danish defender Simon Kjaer to tighten up their defense, well now it appears someone could be on the way out of Anfield to make way for the possible new signing. That player is Martin Skrtel and of all places it appears to be Wolfsburg, the current club of Simon Kjaer, that is the most likely destination.
Skrtel signed for Liverpool in 2008 moving from Russian club Zenit St Petersburg for around £6.5million after rejected deals from a host of other Premier League clubs. He has been a solid performer for the Merseyside outfit, and has played 113 games for the club.
He is tall, good in the air, strong, and is very hard working, he has however never really gone onto totally living up to the potential he once showed. Some Liverpool fans think Skrtel is the weak link in their defense and therefore the sale of the player could not necessarily be a bad thing, especially if it could pave the way for another centreback to move to the club.
The German club see Skrtel as the man to rebuild their defense around and they think that £5million would be the figure required to secure the services of the player. Wolfsburg have had a pretty dreadful season so far and have recently sacked coach Steve Von Claren, they were close to moving for Daniel Agger in January but Kenny Dalglish made it clear that they were unprepared to sell the Dane so they are now looking at team mate Martin Skrtel instead.
If Liverpool were even willing to sell the player, it remains unclear whether the Slovakian would be willing to move, Liverpool may be struggling of late, but potentially they have greater chances of achieving things than Wolfsburg do, however if it becomes clear to the player that the Merseysiders are looking to replace him, he may choose to move in a quest to find more first team opportunities. I do believe however should Liverpool chose to sell there could be quite a few clubs interested in the player.
I think Skrtel has probably reached his peak in English football he is committed and works hard but maybe he doesn’t have what it takes to play in a side who hope to soon challenge for honours.
The interesting factor here is whether some sort of deal could be done that would involve a cash plus player offer, since Liverpool are reportedly interested in the Wolfsburg’s Simon Kjaer, they could potentially offer a lower figure and Skrtel to secure the services of the Dane.
Should some sort of swap deal occur I think it would be to the benefit of both players and both clubs.
