Daniel Sturridge has really impressed over the last few weeks. The Englishman has found his shooting boots, and thus far, he’s been able to remain fit and healthy whilst turning out for Liverpool.
Undeniably, Daniel Sturridge’s return to the first team at Anfield is great news for Liverpool. He’s been very effective this season and has already won the Reds points, and he’ll no doubt continue to have an impact as the season progresses.
However, it could also prove to be good news for one of their rivals too – Tottenham.
Now, one of Spurs’ main issues over the last couple of years on the field has been their inability to find a back-up for Harry Kane. He’s had to shoulder much of the responsibility for the Lilywhites as of late, and that has, naturally, led to moments of burnout – like he has suffered at points this season.
Now, Sturridge could be viewed as a potential backup solution at Spurs, given that his deal at Liverpool expires at the end of the season, but that’s not where he could really benefit the club.
Indeed, it’s his role for England that could make an impact. Kane has had the same issue for his country as he has for Tottenham, with nobody able to keep pace with him in an England shirt. Jamie Vardy tried, but he wasn’t able to match his Leicester record for the Three Lions.
Could Gareth Southgate find his ideal option in Sturridge?
Sturridge has previously been the main man for England, and his goalscoring record is generally quite good, with 8 international goals to his name. His form this season, though, is up there with the best that we’ve ever seen from him, and so could he be a genuine rival for Kane going forward?
Well, if Sturridge can continue to perform, Southgate will surely come calling, and that could be hugely beneficial for Spurs. Sturridge is a proven attacker with goals in his locker, and with the UEFA Nation’s League serving to remove the so-called meaningless friendly from the rotation, every game is important. Kane, however, may be afforded more of a chance on the bench or out of the squad completely – as it’s clear that Sturridge is a player that is more than capable of deputising for him.
Spurs, then, could benefit from their main man becoming slightly less indispensable for his country, and that would be huge news for the club.
