Arsenal and Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are keeping their fingers crossed after the Daily Star revealed that David Moyes is looking to bring Real Madrid’s Asier Illarramendi back to Real Sociedad.
The 24-year-old defensive midfielder was originally billed the ‘next Xabi Alonso’ but since his £24 million move to Madrid from the Anoeta 18 months ago, he has struggled to achieve regular 90 minute football.
Illarramendi is valued at £18 million and Moyes seems to be keen to sign him and our regulars agree that he would fit perfectly into the Scot’s defensive-minded set-up.
Illarramendi has a big decision to make because returning to Sociedad would mean a reunion at his boyhood club but on the other hand, that would be at the expense of potentially joining a club in the Champions League such as Arsenal or Liverpool.
Sociedad are currently in 13th place in La Liga at present and although the club have performed in Europe’s elite competition in the past, it is incredible unlikely they will be next season.
Prior to deadline day, it has been reported that the Premier League duo were set to make £18 million bids for Illarramendi but the winter transfer never came to fruition.
