Manchester City

De Bruyne or Silva – just who has been Man City’s most creative player after 11 PL games?

Manchester City supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this season after their side’s remarkable start to the campaign, which got a whole lot better on Sunday as they breezed past Arsenal 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side were tipped by many to significantly improve this term after last season’s disappointing third place finish, a campaign which also saw the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich fail to win a trophy for the first time in his management career. Yet they look the business this time round and made it ten league victories in a row on Sunday as goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, and Gabriel Jesus sealed a comfortable win over the Gunners, with Alexandre Lacazette’s second half strike proving to be nothing more than a consolation for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Thus, several of our resident City fans have been in fine voice in recent weeks such has been their team’s incredible run of form, and given that they have already booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, they are set up to seriously challenge for major honours in the second half of the campaign.

And much of their brilliance this season can be pinned down to their attacking displays, with a staggering 38 goals in their 11 Premier League matches so far, but just who has been their most creative player in the league thus far?

Well, you won’t be surprised to know that our resident City fans narrowed it down to De Bruyne and David Silva, but it is the former who gets the nod.

The 26-year-old made the move to the Etihad Stadium back in 2015 and has since been a regular feature in the Citizens side, with last season proving to be an exceptional one with a wonderful 21 assists in just 36 league games for the club.

However, the Belgium international is well on his way to beating that this time round with six assists in 11 Premier League matches, which, somewhat surprisingly, is actually one less than teammate Silva.

But when one takes everything else into account, it’s De Bruyne that comes out on top.

The 26-year-old has created 32 chances so far this season to Silva’s 29, while the former averages 2.9 key passes per game to the latter’s 2.6. And in terms of minutes per direct contribution, De Bruyne edges that as well with an average of 117 minutes per goal or assist, while Silva makes a contribution on average every 121 minutes.

Yes, there isn’t a lot between them, but that is arguably why De Bruyne is getting the majority of the plaudits from pundits, players, and fans alike this term, because he has been just that little better than his teammate – his performance against Stoke City the other week underlined that.

And with more dribbles per game (1.8 to Silva’s 1) and more shots per game (2.2 to Silva’s 1.9), the Belgian star is more often trying to make things happen for his team, with that display against Stoke demonstrative of his unbelievable start to the campaign.
