Deadline day ‘enquiry’ reportedly rebuffed as Celtic stood firm to retain influential ace

Celtic supporters have been buoyant in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side avenge December’s heavy defeat to Hearts with a comfortable 3-1 success over the Edinburgh-based outfit on Wednesday.

Brendan Rodgers’ men saw their incredible 69-match unbeaten domestic run come to a shuddering halt with a 4-0 loss at Tynecastle back in December, but the Bhoys have since bounced back admirably to win five of their six matches prior to Wednesday’s clash. And the Scottish Premiership leaders picked up an 18th league victory of the campaign as first half goals from Odsonne Edouard, Dedryck Boyata, and Moussa Dembele sent them on their way to all three points, with Kyle Lafferty’s second half effort proving to be nothing more than a consolation for Craig Levein’s side.

Thus, there have been many delighted Bhoys fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Scottish Sun, which suggests that the Bhoys did rebuff late deadline day interest in striker Dembele from Premier League outfit Crystal Palace.

The France Under-21 international was subject of speculation for much of the January window given his excellent goal-scoring exploits north of the border, with the forward having netted an impressive 41 goals in just 72 games for Rodgers’ side since moving from Fulham back in 2016.

And reports suggest that the in-demand 21-year-old was subject of a deadline day ‘enquiry’ from Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace, who were seemingly on the lookout for reinforcements in a bid to strengthen their chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Yet the Bhoys reportedly rebuffed such approach for Dembele, and with the windows around Europe now shut until the summer, it looks like the Frenchman will remain at Celtic for at least the rest of this season.

Landlord’s verdict: Moussa Dembele has been an absolute revelation since making the move north of the border to Celtic back in 2016, netting a remarkable 41 goals in 72 games to help Brendan Rodgers’ men to the clean sweep of domestic honours.

Unsurprisingly, the French striker was heavily linked with a move away during the January transfer window, and recent reports suggest that the Bhoys were forced to rebuff a deadline day ‘enquiry’ from Crystal Palace to keep hold of the 21-year-old beyond the January 31 deadline.

Knowing that Dembele remained at the club going into February would have delighted Celtic fans anyway, but knowing that their club fought off interest in his services is likely to thrill them even more, with it looking highly likely that the striker will remain at Celtic Park until the summer at least.
