Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern clutching onto their pints dearly with hopes of positive news on the transfer front have received a timely boost this morning, amid reports an international defender will sign with the club.
The Daily Express report that the struggling Blues have agreed a contract extension for Branislav Ivanovic, which extends his deal by one-year and matches his current £120k-a-week wages; whilst it also comes with the option of a further year.
Ivanovic’s deal is in line with the Blues’ policy for players over the age of 30, who are offered no more than 12 months extensions- which has upset Chelsea punters in the past, with Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard moving on as a result.
The extension of the 31-year-old, who turns 32 in February, is a timely boost for Guus Hiddink’s side as the Serbian international had attracted a wealth of interest; including that of both Milan clubs and Zenit St Petersburg.
Whilst our Chelsea supporting punters accept that Ivanovic is past his best and has struggled this season, they believe letting him go at this stage would be a major mistake and are therefore pleased an agreement has been reached.
