Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are breathing a sigh of relief, as they were knocking back the hard stuff amid fears that a crucial defender could leave.
Fortunately for them, and their livers, it doesn’t seem such an exit will happen as The Times states Branislav Ivanovic has agreed terms for a one-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea looked set to lose the veteran defender, who turns 32 next month, on a free transfer at the end of the season when his deal expired. However, that possibility seems to have been ruled-out by swift action from the Chelsea hierarchy.
The Blues have a policy of only offering one-year deals to players over the age of 30, which has been highly-criticised by some fans in the Transfer Tavern after the departures of Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard- with the latter starring for Manchester City, even scoring against the Blues.
It seemed Ivanovic would become the latest big name to leave Stamford Bridge for nothing and he is currently free to discuss pre-contractual agreements with club’s outside of England. However, he seems keen to remain put.
Our landlord believes this is a good deal for Chelsea despite the fact that Ivanovic’s displays this season have been extremely lacklustre.
