Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been lured away from the bar menu for the time being, as they discuss reports that state a significant deal has been agreed.

Metro, publishing an extract from Italian paper Corierre Dello Sportstate that Schalke defender Joel Matip has put pen to paper and signed a pre-contractual agreement to join Liverpool in the summer.

The Cameroonian international was a top-target for Jurgen Klopp in the January transfer window but Schalke refused to sell, despite the fact the defender sees his contract expire at the end of the season, as the Bundesliga side were keen for him to extend his deal.

However, Schalke have been stunned by the 24-year-old as he’s agreed to join Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season.

That would make Matip Klopp’s first significant signing for the Reds, with the only other permanent deal he’s completed so far being the capture of Red Star Belgrade starlet Marko Grujic, who was loaned back to his former club for the remainder of the season.

Our landlord believes this is a massive deal for Liverpool and claims Matip could be the first step towards making the Reds Premier League title contenders.
