Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were hoping for more positive news to open 2016 but have expressed their concern, after worrying reports emerged today.
Basel’s Egyptian midfielder, who plays in a defensive role, was tipped to move to England in a £7m move and all was in place- but work permit issues have thrown the transfer into doubt, with Elneny failing to meet the Football Association’s strict criteria.
The FA’s criteria state signings from outside the EU must come from one of the world’s top 50 nations. However, with Egypt ranked 47th, Elneny is unable to get the permit he requires.
Arsenal are set to appeal the decision and they should emerge successful, meaning the signing can take place next week. This is because Elneny is an experienced international, featuring in every competitive game for the African side in the past two years.
The Gooners are the bar are breathing a sigh of relief, as they desperately look for a replacement for injured Francis Coquelin in defensive midfield.
