The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their win against Swansea City was a sign of things to come. The Red Devils have had a difficult couple of weeks, both on the pitch and off of it, with a loss against Huddersfield last weekend proving to be a lowlight of the season so far. Against Swansea, though, the Red Devils impressed – with Jesse Lingard looking particularly good. Another positive for the club was that Luke Shaw was able to get a few more minutes on the field, and according to the Times, there’s more news regarding the Englishman that fans will want to know about.
The Times is reporting that Luke Shaw’s current deal at Man Utd has been extended by a year, with the Red Devils’ brass taking up an option in the deal to increase its length. It will now end in 2019. Significantly, though fans have been speculating that the option had been taken up previously, the Times also has revealed perhaps one of the reasons why it has been extended. He does look set to remain at Old Trafford for the time being, but long-term, his club could look to move him on – with an extension to his deal allowing them to make as much money from his prospective sale as possible.
In truth, this is pretty good business from the Red Devils, as no matter how difficult Shaw has found life at Old Trafford, there will undoubtedly be a few clubs interested in his services, and a longer contract simply means that he can be sold for more money. It’s been a tough year or so for Shaw, with Mourinho not really rating the Englishman. With injuries playing their part, he has found life difficult, and as the Times reports – his relationship with his manager is fraught with difficulty.
It seems unlikely that this decision has been made based on a long-term plan to keep him at Old Trafford, with a sale in the future looking increasingly likely. He will have no shortage of suitors, with a number of Premier League clubs expected to be interested – with more than a few fans in the pub desperate for him to join their club.
His short-term future has been reportedly decided, but long-term, it truly remains uncertain.
