It's been a pretty tough window for Newcastle fans to endure so far this summer.

Mike Ashley has only managed to bring in Ki Sung-yeung, Martin Dubravka and Kenedy to the team this summer. While all three are solid signings after a 10th place finish, it's not quite the investment Benitez or the fans will have been looking for.

The perennially frugal owner informed Rafa Benitez that the club must sell before they can buy, and it seems that with the sale of Chancel Mbemba, Newcastle might just be able to bring another defender in.

According to the Mirror, Newcastle are closing in on a deal for Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar.

The Breakdown

According to the report, Newcastle will complete the deal for £3.5 million which if true, would be an absolute steal for the club. Once linked with Manchester United, Schar is a physical defender who can also pass the ball out from the back.

The Swiss international defender was highly rated in Switzerland before he made his move to Hoffenheim and then most recently Deportivo La Coruna.

With Deportivo being relegated last season, a cheap deal could be a steal for the Magpies. Schar was an integral member of the Switzerland side that reached the last-16 and with Mbemba leaving the club, Schar will more than fill his shoes.

While it's not £30 million deal that the fans might have been crying out for, it's a cut-price deal but it's one the Newcastle fans should be happy with.
