Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team get back to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men made the trip to the South Coast off the back of successive home draws against Everton and West Brom, yet there was little doubt about the result on Sunday as the Reds produced an attacking masterclass to breeze past Eddie Howe’s Cherries. Goals from Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino secured a comprehensive victory for the Merseyside giants, who in turn moved up to fourth in the Premier League table following Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester City a day earlier.
Thus, there have been many buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Football Italia, which includes interesting comments from Lazio defender and reported Reds target Stefan De Vrij regarding his future at the club.
The 25-year-old made the move to the Serie A giants back in 2014 and has since then gone from strength to strength with 90 appearances for the club, including 27 last term to help the Italian outfit to fifth place in the top-flight, and thus a spot in this season’s Europa League group stages.
And the centre-back’s fine efforts in the heart of the Lazio backline have reportedly attracted much interest from Liverpool in recent times, and Reds boss Klopp is likely to be intrigued by recent comments from De Vrij, which convey uncertainty about his future at the Italian club.
He said: ‘As for the contract renewal, I don’t know what’s going to happen.’
Thus, although it was reported last week that a move for De Vrij seemed unlikely, it appears that a possible January deal for the talented defender could still be on for Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool’s defensive problems have been well documented in the last 18 months or so, with Jurgen Klopp’s side having conceded more goals than any other team in the Premier League’s top four, and the joint-most (alongside Arsenal) of any side in the top seven.
So reports that they are interested in Lazio’s highly-rated centre-back Stefan De Vrij aren’t overly surprising, and the Reds may well have received a potentially big boost in their quest to land the 25-year-old as he himself has suggested that his future at the Italian club is far from certain.
And with January just around the corner, Liverpool could well add to this uncertainty by making a move for the Netherlands international in the New Year.
