Defender opens door for Arsenal switch after failed move last summer

Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have endured a difficult campaign, although they’re in higher spirits today following last night’s hard-fought victory over relegation-threatened Middlesbrough.

The Gunners once again showed defensive frailties in that 2-1 victory though and it’s left many of the punters discussing what changes could be made this summer, amidst speculation Arsenal could bolster their defensive ranks.

Despite the expensive addition of Shkodran Mustafi last summer, Arsenal still have work to do and the door has been opened for them to reignite a move for a previous target of theirs- having seen a bid rejected last summer.

Speaking to Belgian outlet HLN22-year-old Club Brugge defender Bjorn Engels has stated his admiration for the Premier League.

“Take West Brom against Burnley. The stadium is packed and it’s ‘go’ from the first to the last minute. It’s fantastic. The atmosphere, the interviews, analysis. I have at home a box and can follow all the channels.”

Whilst the Gunners already boast the likes of Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel Paulista and Rob Holding, a switch to a three-man defence in the victory over Middlesbrough shows there is room for movement.

If Arsenal decide to stick with that set-up, then a move for Engels could materialise to bolster the squad’s depth and provide additional competition for the aforementioned players.

Our landlord believes it would be a smart move, especially as Koscielny isn’t getting any younger and he doesn’t rate Brazilian international Paulista that highly.
