Defensive change: 67% of Man Utd fans want Mourinho to drop 26-year-old against Tottenham

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their team to finish the season with a trophy. It has been an inconsistent few weeks for the Red Devils, but under Mourinho, there has been clear progression.

However, if he finishes the season without winning a trophy, you could argue that this season has been a backwards step – given the fact that Man Utd won a few pieces of silverware last season.

This weekend’s clash with Tottenham, then, is vitally important. A win will put them into the FA Cup final, and with that comes a chance at a precious piece of silverware.

Jose Mourinho, then, will need to get his team selection spot on to have any chance of beating the Lilywhites – and one player that it appears as though a decent amount of Man Utd fans don’t want to see on the teamsheet is Phil Jones.

Our landlord recently ran a poll on the prospect of Jones being dropped for the game, the results of which can be seen below, and a whopping 67% of supporters have voted in favour of him losing his place.

Conversely, just 33% of fans are keen for him to retain his place.

On his day, Jones is a solid defender. He offers decent tackling, pace, and he’s a strong asset in the air. However, his main problem comes with his inconsistency.

He can put in a solid game one week, and then really struggle the next. That’s a huge problem for Man Utd, especially in the context of this game, as one mistake could effectively end their hopes of an FA Cup final win. Mourinho needs to be able to rely on every member of his team, and Jones, simply put, isn’t reliable enough.

That said, Man Utd aren’t blessed with options at the back, and so Mourinho will have to be creative if he opts to not utilise Jones.
