Jermain Defoe yesterday admitted his frustrations about the lack of first-team football he got this season adding wild speculation that the hitman may be on his way out of White Hart Lane. After being sacrificed for the arrival of Rafael Van der Vaart, Defoe scored just four league goals this season.
If he is to get his career with England back on track, he’ll need to find first team football preferably in England. He’s enjoyed spells with Bournmeouth, West Ham and Portsmouth, all southern clubs and I’m sure the striker will be looking to stay in the South of England if possible.
So who will be seeking his services?? An interesting one could be bitter rivals Arsenal, who have long since sought someone in Defoe’s mold that can just stick the ball in the back of the net. Van Persie has been in glorious form, but Chamkh’s decline this latter half of the season has been alarming and no doubt Wenger will be looking to bring a striker in and Defoe won’t cost in excess of £15 million you wouldn’t have thought.
A scary thought could be a fully fit and raring Jermain Defoe in the SPL with Rangers or Celtic. He would score goals by the dozen in that league you would think and the move could really do wonders for his confidence and his future employability. It’s not expected that Rangers could afford Defoe, but Celtic might be able to and they would view it as their most effective path back to Scottish dominance. Neil Lennon has said that he is going to buy someone of a Henrik Larsson nature this summer, in terms of reputation and ability. A quite frankly, who fits the bill better than Defoe?
Newcastle United are a club that desperately need a striker to replace the goals of Andy Carroll. Pardew is expected to have money to spend following the £35 million received for Carroll and Defoe could be the next big Newcastle Number 9. He’s English and he scores goals my Lord. One thing is for sure, Harry won’t be short of offers..
