Liverpool will head to Marbella for a warm-weather training camp this week as they prepare for their Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich.
Following their early exit from the FA Cup, Jurgen Klopp’s side will look to use the upcoming week to their advantage.
However, he has revealed to the club’s official website that one of his defenders has been unable to join them and will be in a ‘tight race’ to be fit for the meeting with the Bundesliga giants.
Dejan Lovren has had his injury problems this season and is currently on the sidelines once again with a hamstring concern he picked up against Wolverhampton Wanderers towards the beginning of January.
“Dejan is not here and Joe [Gomez] is not here,” Klopp told the club’s official website.
“That’s never a good sign, I would say, but we will try everything to make Dejan available for Munich. It will be a tight race.
“For him, it makes sense in the moment to be in another place to do what he has to do. It wouldn’t have helped if he was here, so we will try everything – that’s clear.”
The news that Lovren is in a ‘tight race’ to be fit for the game against Bayern Munich will be concerning for Liverpool and Klopp.
With Gomez unavailable and Virgil van Dijk suspended for the three yellow cards he picked up in the group stages, Joel Matip will be the Premier League’s only recognised centre-back for the home tie.
Lovren has had his injury concerns this season, however, Liverpool will be hoping he is fit and available this time next week.
