Dejan Lovren started yesterday against Manchester City, his first start in the Premier League since the final day of last season against Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield. On his return, the Croatian international bossed it at Anfield and was part of the reason why the Citizens struggled to break down Jurgen Klopp’s side. Lovren is one of those players, he might make mistakes and he might cost you a few points every season, but he leaves everything out on the football pitch and you can never accuse him of a lack of effort. The defender missed the start of the season with a Pelvis injury after impressing for his country on is way to losing in the World Cup final but now it looks like he’s back and ready to help his club side on to a successful season.
Yesterday was a class showing from Lovren. Despite his early misjudgement that could have resulted in a Manchester City penalty when he appeared to kick out Sergio Aguero, he was solid all game. The pick of his performance came in the second half when he put in a crunching challenge to dispossess Gabriel Jesus during a menacing Manchester City counter-attack, a challenge that got Anfield on their feet as they started to believe they could grab more than just a point from the tie.
You can read The Reds’ thoughts on Lovren’s display here:
This guy put in two superb 1v1 tackles in 2nd half and don't get the praise he deserves. Bit clumsy on Aguero but that was via an unexpected Gomez error.

I thought Lovren was excellent TBF but Gomez didn’t look comfortable at RB. Tough decisions for JK lie ahead…

He played for the badge I'm happy to see that every player delivers when they are in the squad
