The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are ready for Dele Alli to drop down to the bench. After the hype that he built last season, the Englishman has been nothing short of a flop this term, and it’s pretty clear that a spell on the sidelines could do him good. Lacking the attacking edge that made him famous last term, he’s really disappointed this season. Even pundits who tend to champion young English players like Alan Shearer have been slamming him for his form, with the former Newcastle forward describing him as ‘falling short of the hype’ in his column with the Sun.
The main question for Mauricio Pochettino, though, is who would be a good replacement? Tottenham aren’t blessed with attacking depth, and so it’s not going to be easy for the Argentine. That being said he does have one option that our landlord thinks would be perfect: Fernando Llorente.
Llorente has had a tough time of it at Spurs, but there’s no doubting his quality. He bagged 15 league goals last season, earmarking him as one of the Premier League’s most potent forwards, and so he’d certainly be a threat in front of goal. His arrival in the team would also give the club a different dimension. He’d allow them to go slightly more direct, whilst also utilising more aerial balls – giving them something new other than their standard pass-and-move system.
Llorente’s poor form this term is a concern, of course, but his lack of game time means that he hasn’t really had enough of a chance to really prove himself. You can’t write him off, given the small sample size of his game time, and so there’s only one way to find out.
One thing is certain: Dele Alli needs a rest, and so Pochettino has a big call to make. Is Llorente a good fit? Vote below and let us know why!
