The resident Lilywhites in the Transfer Tavern have been deeply disappointed with the performances of Dele Alli during the first-half of the season.
Dele Alli became one of Europe’s most highly-regarded young talents after a fantastic campaign during the 2017/2017 season in which he scored 22 goals and provided 13 assists in 50 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur. However, so far this season, Alli has failed to reach the impeccably high-standards he set for himself in the previous campaign, much to the frustration of the Lilywhites propping up the bar.
The 21-year-old England international has still managed to score 7 goals and lay on 6 assists in his 22 appearances this season which is by no means a poor return, but his overall performances have lacked the quality he has demonstrated in the past.
Perhaps what Alli needs is the arrival of a pacey winger who can provide Tottenham with a fresh attacking dynamic and create more opportunities for him to find space in and around the penalty area.
With that being said, the Spurs supporters should be boosted by reports in The Sun which claim Tottenham are set to rival the likes of Roma, Juventus, Napoli and PSG for the signature of Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa, rated at £15.30m on Transfermarkt.
Fiorentina’s 20-year-old prodigy has shown immense levels of promise in the Italian top-flight since breaking into the clubs first-team last season – hence the interest from a host of Serie A’s heavyweights.
Tottenham have been guilty of playing an overly narrow system in the past, and that approach has undoubtedly restricted Alli from finding space and time on the ball between the line of midfield and defence.
Therefore, Pochettino should be actively pursuing the transfer of a natural winger in the coming transfer windows and experimenting with a system containing a wide player on either side of the pitch.
With the transfer of Chiesa, Tottenham will have a right-winger at their disposal who will provide plenty of opportunities goal-scoring opportunities for Alli and also increase the England star’s freedom in crucial areas of the pitch which should help him to rediscover his best form for the club.
