After the news emerged yesterday that a large contingent of Tottenham regulars will not be featuring against Barcelona tonight, it has opened the door for other players to shine.
Stars Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Mousa Démbéle have all been ruled out of tonight’s clash against the Spanish champions, and this may be worrying times for manager Mauricio Pochettino.
However, one player that could use this as an opportunity to kickstart his season is Harry Winks. The 22-year-old has been eased back into action by Pochettino after recovering from a long term injury, however, he has been less than convincing. With the midfield maestro Démbéle out, this is his chance to command the midfield.
Tottenham were in a very similar position in November last year, when The Lilywhites hosted European champions Real Madrid. The Belgian was also injured that day, and fans were worried how Tottenham’s relatively inexperienced midfield would handle the likes on Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić. However, Winks was imperious that day, outplaying his opponents in a display that put him on the radar of all fans in England.
A serious injury curtailed Winks’ progress last season, and deprived him of a place in England’s World Cup squad, but tonight could be a chance to revive his career at Tottenham, and put him in the forefront of England manager Gareth Southgate’s plans.
Tottenham will be depleted tonight, but they still have a lot of high quality players on offer to come away victorious. In order for that to happen, some of the players that are not big names at the club will have to step up, and Winks is one of them.
