Departure of Wayne Rooney has allowed one of Marco Silva’s best players to flourish

Wayne Rooney is flourishing in the MLS, that can’t be denied. The former Everton and Man Utd man struggled towards the end of his time in England, but he’s really turned it around across the Atlantic.

With other 10 goals and 8 assists, Rooney has been at the heart of a rapid turnaround for DC United, and their spot in the playoffs is largely down to the arrival of Rooney.

Naturally, then, that makes you wonder – what if? What if Wayne Rooney had chosen to stay put at Everton for another year. If he’s playing so well in America, surely he’d be able to replicate that in England?

Well, the reality is quite different. You’ve got the obvious argument of the MLS being at a lower of level in comparison to the Premier League, of course, but there’s also the Everton squad more broadly.

No longer is he a square peg in a round hole. Instead, he’s flourishing in the heart of the Everton midfield – and much of that is down the absence of Rooney.

The Toffees have improved this season, and at the heart of that improvement? Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sigurdsson struggled during his first season on Merseyside, and much of that was down to Rooney. Sigurdsson had to simply fit in around the English legend – and that didn’t work out for him.

His tally of 4 goals and 3 assists highlighted that, and his arrival at the club was quickly deemed a bad move.

However, this season that’s all changed. He ‘s already matched his goal tally for the year, and more generally he’s looking so much better.

What’s changed? Sure, the manager has, but we’re betting that the departure of Rooney has played an even bigger role. Now Sigurdsson is the focal point of the Everton midfielder, and he’s the man tasked with creating magic going forward.
