Manchester City look set to miss out on their multi-million pound target, after Edin Dzeko moved to distance himself from a move away from Wolfsburg in January.
Asked whether he would be staying with the Bundesliga side, Dzeko replied: “That is up to Wolfsburg… but at the moment it looks like I am staying.”
Although the striker did not rule out a future transfer away from the club, in order to fulfil his dream of playing Champions League football every season, his comments seem to have poured cold water on Roberto Mancini’s interest.
So, as long as Wolfsburg are qualifying for the Champions League, he stays. When they miss out, he goes.
Now, I’m sure it isn’t as clear-cut as that, but whatever Dzeko’s motivation, it looks like he won’t be going anywhere just yet.
So, what next for City? Mancini has to do something with the £38m now burning a hole in his pocket, and the rumours are already flying.
Well, the most popular choice (and no surprise, really) is Liverpool’s Fernando Torres. Now, I’m not saying that he would never go to City, and if the Eastlands outfit came up with a suitably outrageous bid next summer, Torres could well be tempted if his current side fail to improve sufficiently. But a move in January just ain’t gonna happen.
In fact, City may now turn their attention to Porto’s Brazilian striker, Hulk, valued at £20m. He’s got 13 goals in 13 league games so far this season, and is thought to be available and keen on a move to the Premiership.
Sometimes, you just have to cut your losses and take whatever you can get.
