However, if the central defender can start to ensure defensive solidity and leads from the front, then the Magpies could soon turn things around in the Premier League.
The 31-year-old has struggled to dominate the midfielder area, as well as being wasteful in the current campaign, with many supporters calling for a replacement in January.
Jonjo Shelvey has had to carry the main load in the middle of midfield for large parts of this season, so changes definitely need to be made to try and resolve their current woes.
