Not many fans know more about transfer failures than the Chelsea faithful. Over the years, it seems like there have been more misses than hits in that regard, with a flurry of disappointing signings failing to do the business at Stamford Bridge.
This summer, then, Chelsea need to hit the reset button, but in order to bring in a few more talented new faces, some of the players currently at the club need to be moved on.
It’s fair to say that of all the players that have been brought to South West London over the last few years, Danny Drinkwater is up there with the worst of them.
That’s not to say that Drinkwater is a bad player, far from it in fact. The Englishman was sensational alongside N’Golo Kante at Leicester City. But since moving to Stamford Bridge, it just hasn’t worked out for him.
Overshadowed by the likes of Cesc Fabregas, N’Golo Kante and even Tiemoue Bakayoko, Drinkwater hasn’t been able to forge a prominent role for himself at Stamford Bridge.
This summer, then, selling him makes perfect sense. Chelsea need improvements in midfield, and with Drinkwater not getting in the side as it is, it would make no sense but to keep him at Stamford Bridge.
He’s rated at £18 million by Transfer Markt, and so the Blues would likely be able to get a decent return on him were they to sell him that they could then use to reinvest this summer.
Drinkwater clearly found his level at Leicester City, because since coming to Chelsea, he’s been a huge flop.
