Disappointment for Benitez in pursuit of attacking reinforcements as unwelcome reports emerge

Newcastle United supporters have been slightly downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days, what with their side’s unbeaten start to 2018 coming to an end at the hands of Premier League table-toppers Manchester City on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the runaway leaders having won two and drawn the other of their three games in the New Year, with victories over Stoke City and Luton Town as well as a draw against Swansea City giving our resident Magpies fans some hope heading into the second half of the season. However, they were unable to maintain their unbeaten start to the year as a Sergio Aguero hat-trick inspired Pep Guardiola’s Citizens to a routine win at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Jacob Murphy’s second half effort proving to be nothing more than a consolation for the North East giants.

Subsequently, there have been many despondent Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by a recent report from Voetbal International (via The Shields Gazette), which suggests that the club have had a second bid rejected by Feyenoord for striker Nicolai Jorgensen.

The 27-year-old made the move to the Dutch giants back in 2016 and has since proven his worth to the side, netting 34 goals in just 61 matches for the club, including nine in just 19 games this term in their run to fifth place in the Eredivisie.

And the Denmark international has reportedly attracted the interest of Benitez’s Newcastle, who were unsuccessful with a bid earlier this week, and recent reports detail further frustration for the Magpies as they have also failed with an improved offer for Jorgensen.

And with time ticking until next week’s deadline, it very much remains to be seen whether Benitez can indeed bring attacking reinforcements to St James’ Park.

Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United’s goal-scoring woes have been well documented so far this season, with that department regarded by many as the key to their Premier League survival hopes this term.

And manager Rafa Benitez is clearly on the lookout for striking reinforcements having made a move for Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen, yet recent reports suggest that the Magpies have failed with a second bid for the 27-year-old.

And with the Dutch club reportedly valuing the Denmark international nearer to £20 million, only time will tell whether Newcastle are indeed willing or even able to stump up the cash for the forward.
