There have been contrasting emotions from our resident Everton and West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks.
The Toffees faithful have seen their side lose four successive matches in all competitions, the latest of which a 4-0 loss at Manchester United on Sunday, to increase the pressure on manager Ronald Koeman ahead of their clash with Sunderland in the Carabao Cup this evening.
Whereas Slaven Bilic’s Hammers cruised past Bolton Wanderers 3-0 in the same competition on Tuesday to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to three games, having beaten Huddersfield Town and drawn at West Brom in the last week or so.
However, supporters of both sides are likely to be frustrated by a recent report in Spanish newspaper AS, which details that Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose, a reported target of the Premier League duo, has penned a new deal at the La Liga outfit.
The 25-year-old only moved to the Spanish club last year but has since gone from strength to strength with 16 goals in just 29 games for the side, 14 of which came in his first full season last time out to help Sociedad to a sixth place finish in La Liga, and thus a spot in this term’s Europa League.
And his fine goal-scoring form, which he has translated into the early stages of this season as well, reportedly attracted the interest of Everton and West Ham in 2017, with the latter linked with the Brazilian back in February, and the former only last month.
Yet, it appears that both sides will end up disappointed as recent reports suggest that the striker has signed a new deal at the Spanish club, which is likely to force the Premier League duo into looking at other targets ahead of the January transfer window.
Landlord’s verdict: Both Everton and West Ham have been crying out for a striker in recent times, and the former’s woeful start to the season has only further underlined their need.
But it doesn’t look like Willian Jose, a target of the two clubs this year, will be making the move to England any time soon, having recently penned a new deal at Real Sociedad to remain there until 2022.
The 25-year-old has been in wonderful goal-scoring form in the last 12 months and thus this will come as a major blow to the Premier League duo, who may need reinforcements in January to improve their season’s fortunes based on what we’ve seen so far from both clubs.
