Assuming that Man City are willing to meet Villa’s demands for James Milner, Villa’s new manager should have a substantial amount of money to make new additions to his squad. It is safe to say that Villa fans will want to see all of this money being put to good use to help heal the pain of having to watch one of their best players going to one of their closest rivals in the battle to get a Champions League place.
Villa have a tradition of leaving most of their transfer activity until just before the deadline and doesn’t often look outside of the UK for thier signings so here are some players they might want to take a look at spending his Milner money on.
Villa are in need of a new striker and someone of Darren Bent’s quality would seem like a perfect choice. Bent has been on fire for Sunderland so would obviously they would be reluctant to let him go cheaply, if at all. Perhaps if Villa threw an exchange with their own goal machine Emile Heskey into the mix, they might be able to swing the deal!
A more realistic transfer target would be Robbie Keane. He has fallen out of favour at Tottenham and has been linked with a number of different clubs. Harry Redknapp has hinted that he would be willing to let Keane go in order to raise funds for new players. Keane is looking increasingly surplus to requirements at Tottenham and a move to Villa might be the fresh start his career needs.
Whoever replaces O’Neill also has the unenviable task of finding a player who can replace Milner in the Villa squad. City seem willing to part with Stephen Ireland as part of the deal. After having a poor season last season with City he may also be a player looking for a fresh start and his creativity could make him an ideal candidate as a replacement for Milner.
Charles N’Zogbia is another player that would be a good replacement for Milner. He was consistently excellent for Wigan last season winning both the Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Season. With Wigan one of the teams tipped for relegation this season now might be the time for Villa to offer N’Zogbia the chance to make a switch to a club that can offer him a chance to play in Europe and play for a team that is pushing for Champions League football rather than being caught up in a relegation battle.
Having faced criticism for failing to bring in any new players so far this summer and with only 22 days left of the transfer window O’Neill 2.0 will have to get his skates on if he wants to avoid disappointing expectant Villa fans.
