For the second time this week, Aston Villa have been linked with a move for a Tottenham right-back – this time Vedran Corluka. After reported interest in Alan Hutton, it now seems McLeish has turned his attention to the Croatian to occupy Villa’s troublesome right-back position.
The irony of all this is that Villa are in desperate need of a right-back due to Kyle Walker returning from loan to presumably usurp Hutton and Corluka in the starting line-up at White Hart Lane.
Corluka has suffered from various injuries during his time with Spurs, so much so that he has only been able to play 38 games over the past two seasons. With Spurs needing to trim their squad with too many players on their book, Corluka could well be one of those to leave.
Goal.com claims that Corluka has been unsettled by recent transfer rumours concerning best friend Luka Modric. Though Modric’s presence was key to Corluka joining Spurs, if true, it’s absolutely ridiculous.
Corluka’s value has decreased considerably ever since moving to Manchester City for £8m. After a £5.5m move to White Hart Lane and both a failure to hold down a starting place and many injuries, it is possible Villa could sign the Croatian for as little as £4m.
McLeish is desperate to make his mark on the Villa squad, his contribution so far being to sell two of the team’s best players with Ashley Young and Stewart Downing leaving Villa Park. Whilst a cut-price move for Corluka would not have fans salivating for the new season, it would certainly add much needed depth to the squad.
