One of Chelsea’s Champions League Nou Camp heros Raul Meireles is an £8m target for the team Chelsea dramatically knocked out on their way to glory last season Napoli.
The Italian club have some cash to splash following the sale of Ezequil Lavezzi to PSG. It seems they have targetted Chelsea’s midfield man after impressing in the Champions League and carrying that form into Euro 2012 helping Portugal reach at least the semi-finals.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has made contact with Meireles’ agents over a £8m move but Meireles is unwilling to discuss his future until after the Euro finals. The 29-year-old said:
“I am focused on the Euros and cannot think about my future now”.
Meireles joined Chelsea on deadline day last summer after spending only one season at Liverpool and performed well in his first season at Stamford Bridge especially in Europe.
It seems after only one season at Chelsea, Meireles could be set to move on once more. Not all Chelsea fans are convinced by Meireles and he is far from a fan favourite.
If Chelsea were to capture Luka Modric, give more opportunities to Josh McEachran and Oriel Romeu, given the annoucement that the club are keeping Michael Essien and the newly adapted deep role for Frank Lampard and finally the emerging form of John Obi Mikel then Meireles certainly faces a lot of competition next season.
Chelsea paid Liverpool a reported £12m for Meireles and considering the one good, successful season they have got from him and given the competition mentioned then maybe a move for £8m would be a good deal for all parties.
Chelsea fans! Should he stay or should he go?
