Liverpool have been simply sensational in the current campaign but nothing will matter if they fail to turn their positive results into silverware from here on in. Indeed, they still have the chance to secure the Premier League and the Champions League, but it won't be an easy task.

One of the main reasons behind Liverpool's rise in the current campaign has been down to Virgil Van Dijk who's been nothing short of sensational at the heart of the defence for the Reds.

Interestingly, it appears as if he's now getting the recognition he deserves as Daily Mail journalist Dominic King has named him as his pick for player of the year.

'The best central defender Liverpool have had since the days of Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson. It’s not just his own form that has been so good, it’s what he’s done to help the others around him. He’s Liverpool’s master and commander and nobody in the Premier League has matched his consistency. He edges out Sergio Aguero, who is arguably the best striker in Europe.'

Liverpool fans will agree that the Dutchman has all the makings to become a club legend if he continues to thrive at Anfield, as some of his defensive displays have been breathtaking this season.

The Dutchman holds the key to Liverpool's title hopes and fans will forever be grateful for FSG's decision to splash the cash on the central defender. Indeed, he's more than proved his worth since moving to Merseyside and he should find himself being crowned player of the season if anyone has any sense.

Liverpool fans, surely Van Dijk has to be up there as one of the best players to have graced the Anfield turf in recent years? Join the discussion by commenting below!
