The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern knew this was coming…
After weeks of speculation, it has finally been confirmed: Chelsea veteran John Obi Mikel has officially left Stamford Bridge.
As confirmed by the Blues on their official website, Mikel has left Chelsea after over a decade – following Oscar to the Chinese Super League. Mikel will play for Tianjin TEDA in the Chinese top flight, and will become the latest recruit in the quickly emerging league.
Confirmation followed a letter penned by Mikel earlier in the day and posted on his own Twitter account, in which he thanked Chelsea, the club’s staff and the fans for their fantastic support during his tenure – as the Nigerian closed the book on a legendary career at Stamford Bridge.

Often an underrated midfielder, Mikel was never a regular for the Blues, but he was always consistent when called upon – with endless moments of brilliance leading to historic moments at Chelsea. Of course, the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern will never forget his heroics in the Champions League in 2012, nor will they forget his outstanding performances last season whilst the rest of the team stuttered.
Whilst never highly-rated outside of Stamford Bridge, Mikel will go down as a legend at Chelsea – and our landlord thinks that he deserves every bit of praise that he gets from the Chelsea faithful.
