Our resident Liverpool fans who were in the Tavern today to celebrate their 6-0 triumph over Aston Villa at the weekend and now they find themselves buying another round of drinks to celebrate the news that Joel Matip will move to Anfield in a free transfer at the end of the season.
Jurgen Klopp has clearly identified that his side’s defence needs to be improved, especially if he wants them to play with his pressing style, and now Schalke have confirmed that central defender Matip will join Liverpool in the summer.
The 24-year old has been a mainstay for Schalke, starting every single league game for the German outfit, but he has ultimately decided to begin a new challenge in England, opting not to sign a new contract.
Reds boss Klopp, who previously coached Schalke’s Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund, will know all about the defender’s ability.
Schalke manager Horst Heldt revealed to the club’s official website.
“We have had many intensive discussions since May last year with both Joel and his advisor. It was soon clear that factors we ultimately could not influence would be decisive for Joel’s decision.”
“His decision is nothing against Schalke. He wants to try something new.”
The German-born Cameroonian defender, who has managed to score 4 goals in all competitions this term, added:
“I have always said that I would only leave Schalke for one reason: to try something new. Therefore, a change within the Bundesliga never came into consideration. Although my decision is definitely not easy, I am convinced that now is the right time to take this step.”
As well as central defence, Matip is also comfortable in either full-back position, as well as in a defensive midfield position.
“Schalke 04 will remain a big family for me. I was always proud to play for this great club. Therefore, I will do everything possible in the coming months to get the most out of this season.”
Our landlord believes that his versatility and experience could prove invaluable for Klopp at Liverpool, and at just 24, he could establish himself as a key player in the Reds’ backline.
