Done Deal: Man Utd confirm transfer as midfielder moves to Old trafford

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern have enjoyed a prolific summer so far…

A number of big names have already moved to Old Trafford, most notably Romelu Lukaku, and now the Belgian has been joined by another new arrival.

As confirmed on the official Man Utd website, the Red Devils have completed the signing of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea, with the Serbian moving to Old Trafford on a three-year deal.

Matic had been expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, having not travelled with the Blues on their tour of Asia, and so the news has come as no real surprise to the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern.

The Man Utd fans, meanwhile, are celebrating, as they think that the Serbian may be the final piece of Jose Mourinho’s puzzle at Old Trafford.

Landlord’s Verdict

Nemanja Matic has been a divisive figure at Stamford Bridge, but you can’t doubt the influence that the Serbian has had within the Blues’ first team.

A defensive midfielder by trade, he was brought in to sure up the Chelsea defence, and he did exactly that. Forming a fantastic partnership with Cesc Fabregas under Jose Mourinho, the Serbian was the steel in the Blues’ midfield – allowing Fabregas to move forward. This is exactly what Man Utd can expect from him next season, with the Serbian allowing the likes of Paul Pogba to dominate the Man Utd attack.

Pogba struggled last term because he was forced to work hard defensively. Next year, with Matic in the fold, that won’t be such a problem. Even so, against tough opposition that Man Utd may have to dig in against, Matic will have no problem aligning himself alongside the likes of Mauroane Fellaini – with the Serbian equally adept at playing alongside a defensive partner as he did with N’Golo Kante.

He will turn 29 on August 1st, so he isn’t a long-term option for the Red Devils, but he is undoubtedly going to do a job over the next few years. With age comes experience, and given that he has helped Chelsea to a couple of Premier League trophies in recent years, he could be just what Man Utd need to go one step further.
