The Sunderland fans in The Transfer Tavern are gathered at the bar having a drink discussing confirmation of a new signing that has arrived at The Stadium of Light.

The club have confirmed news that they have signed former Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper on a deal until the end of the season.

The keeper has brought into the club as cover for both Vito Mannone and Jordan Pickford following the departure of Costel Pantilloman who left for Premier League rivals Watford earlier this month.

The 40 year old spent most of his career with North East rivals before leaving to join Hull City during the summer of 2013, he was released from the KC Stadium during the summer and Sam Allardyce has chosen the keeper to come to Wearsiders.

Speaking about the signing of Harper, Sunderland boss Allardyce:

“Steve will be a positive addition to our goalkeeping stable. He has vast experience at the top level and that can only be beneficial to Vito and Jordan as they continue to develop. He knows the club well and, as an Easington lad born and bred, he needs no introduction to Sunderland.”

The Sunderland fans in The Transfer Tavern have given a mixed reaction to the news but are sure he will be a capable understudy to both keepers already at the club.

Sunderland fans, will Harper play for the first-team? Let us know in the comments below!
