Done deal: Sunderland defender completes Portugal switch

Dejan Lovren The Sunderland fans in The Transfer Tavern are having a friendly game of darts this evening and discussing another departure from the club.

Sunderland have confirmed that defender Sebastian Coates has left the club on loan and joined Sporting Lisbon until the end of the season.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has not held back in letting players leave the club this month with Danny Graham, Costel Pantillimon, Will Buckley and Charis Mavrias already gone as the manager looks to raise funds to build a squad capable of avoiding relegation from the Premier League come May.

Coates joined Sunderland from Liverpool on a permanent deal in July last year following a successful loan spell towards the end of last term but since Sam Allardyce has taken over the Uruguay international has barely played and made just 16 appearances to date.

The Sunderland fans are pleased that their manager is cutting the wage bill to get rid of high earners who are not playing, but would also like to thank Coates for his efforts during his time with the club.
