Done Deal: Chelsea finally secure defender deal

The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have been waiting for this deal to be finalised all day, and we finally have confirmation on Chelsea’s latest signing.

As per Fiorentina’s official website, Chelsea have officially completed a move for La Viola left-back Marcos Alonso, in a deal that is expected to top £24 million.

The transfer has been long reported, with the Blues keen to land a new left full-back following the departure of Baba Rahman earlier on in the summer.

Whilst our landlord thinks that the £24 million price tag is a tad excessive, he also thinks that Alonso is a well-versed defender with crucial Premier League experience.

The Chelsea faithful here in the Tavern will recognise the Spanish full-back from his time with Bolton. He spent three years with the Trotters between 2010 and 2013, before making a move to Fiorentina.

At 25-years-old, Alonso represents a potential long-term solution to Chelsea’s left-back woes, having struggled to fill the void left by Ashley Cole over the last few years.

The Chelsea fans here in the Tavern are split on the move; with many holding judgement on the defender until he makes his debut in a Chelsea shirt. Some of the more vocal members of the Chelsea crowd are writing him off due to his club history – but the Spaniard definitely deserves the benefit of the doubt.

The deal is the first of several expected to be concluded today, with deals for both David Luiz and Aymen Abdennour expected to be completed before the 11:00pm deadline – completing a trio of defensive additions on Deadline Day.

In case anyone needs reminding on what Alonso will bring to the Blues this year, take a look at this short compilation video detailing some of his best bits…

Our landlord thinks he could become a hit with the Blues, despite a number of Chelsea fans speaking out against the deal.

Chelsea fans – do you agree with the Blues here in the Tavern? Is this a bad or a good deal by Conte?
