The Liverpool fans were absolutely incandescent in the Transfer Tavern last night after they conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
Liverpool and Tottenham played out a Premier League classic on Merseyside yesterday afternoon that will live long in the memory of both sets of supporters. The Reds faithful propping up our bar in the tavern were furious with the standard of refereeing on show as Tottenham were awarded two highly contentious penalties in the final ten minutes of the match.
The first penalty arrived just moments after Victor Wanyama had scored one of the most delightful strikes you’re ever likely to see in the 80th minute to equalise for Spurs.
Harry Kane attempted to take the ball around Lorius Karius in the 86th minute following a through ball from Dele Alli, but the England international appeared to be upended by the onrushing Liverpool goalkeeper and John Moss instantly pointed to the penalty spot.
Kane ultimately missed the resulting penalty after a mini inquest on the sideline involving the referee and his assistant, and Mo Salah looked to have snatched the three points for Liverpool in stoppage time with a solo effort that was worthy of winning any game of football.
But perhaps the most frustrating decision of the night was still to come for Liverpool supporters, as Erik Lamela went down under the challenge of Virgil Van Dijk in Liverpool’s area with just seconds to play, and John Moss pointed to the spot once again, much to the disbelief of the Liverpool supporters.
Kane made no mistake on the second occasion to secure a 2-2 draw for the travelling Lilywhites who remain within 3 points of Liverpool in the race for a top-four spot.
After the game, the Liverpool supporters took to Twitter to lambaste Tottenham’s perceived culture of diving within their ranks, as plenty of The Reds faithful suggested that both Kane and Lamela were guilty of simulation.
Here’s what the Liverpool fans had to say about Lamela and Kane’s antics on Twitter in the aftermath of proceedings…
