The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a tweet from Toby Alderweireld. The 29-year-old Belgian superstar has been one of Spurs’ best defenders of the Premier League era, and he might have just played his last game for the club. The classy, ball-playing defender joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid back in summer 2015 and has helped Mauricio Pochettino’s side to three consecutive Champions League qualifications.

Losing Toby Alderweireld is going to be tough on Spurs fans all over the world, who have grown to love their number four over his three short years in North London. In his debut season alone he scored huge goals against Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United at one end, whilst helping to contribute towards Spurs’ incredible defensive record, which was the best in the league for the two seasons where he consistently featured, as Spurs came 3rd in his first year.
This season has been tougher for Tottenham fans and Alderweireld. The Belgian limped off injured in the club’s Champions League group stage win over Real Madrid and then with contract issues hampering his game time, the defender has only managed to feature 21 times in all competitions for Pochettino’s side. The ex-Southampton and Ajax man reportedly wanted £200,000 per week on a four-year deal, something Daniel Levy was unwilling to offer to the veteran centre-back that kind of money on a deal that will expire when he’s 33-years-old.
You can read our distraught Lilywhites’ pleas for Alderweireld to stay here:
Dear Toby’s PR team,
One final time, kindly ask him to SIGN THE TING.

Well aware this is only going to your PR Team.
If today was your final game only right to acknowledge the contribution you’ve given to us, hands down one of the best defenders to have played for us.
Club should be doing everything in their power to keep you if you want to stay.

Good luck in the next chapter, it's always a gamble to move to a big club competing in Europe and domestically but I think you'll fit in perfectly which ever club you move to….
