‘Don’t you dare’ – Newcastle United fans on Twitter beg club not to sanction transfer after post

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been urging their club to keep Mikel Merino at St James Park as the club tweeted him a happy birthday message. The Spanish midfielder made a positive start to his Newcastle career but after a back injury, he failed to play his way back into the team with the form of Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame keeping him sidelined.

The Magpies propping our bar up were keen to wish their man a happy birthday but also wanted to make it clear that they need him to stay on Tyneside. The fans at Newcastle will always warm to a player who gives it their all, regardless of their ability, and Merino is one that has talent in abundance to go with his superb work rate. The 22-year-old Spanish midfielder will be hoping whatever he does this summer he’ll playing more first-team football next season.

This season has been a really tough one for Merino. He started the season with a flourish and was absolutely superb up until he was unfortunate to suffer a back injury in October. The ex-Borussia Dortmund man made 24 Premier League appearances for the Geordies, although only played 90 minutes eight times in those 24 games. He did manage to open his Newcastle account though, scoring the only goal at St James Park as the Magpies overcame Crystal Palace 1-0.
