Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose at the hands of both Burnley and Bournemouth prior to the international break, results which saw them fall into the bottom half of the Premier League.
Rafa Benitez’s men made a decent start to life back in the top tier by winning four of their opening nine league matches, yet their momentum was checked by Sean Dyche’s Burnley on October 30 as a Jeff Hendrick strike sealed a 1-0 win for the Clarets. And the Magpies suffered a fifth defeat of the campaign just a few days later as Steve Cook’s late header was enough to secure Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth a deserved 1-0 win at St James’ Park, thus moving them out of the bottom three and instigating Newcastle’s fall to 11th.
Thus, there has been a subdued atmosphere among our resident Magpies fans in the Tavern this week, yet they may be slightly encouraged by a recent report from Marca (via talkSPORT).
The 28-year-old currently plays his trade at Spanish giants Barcelona and has done so since 2016, yet he has only made 11 first team appearances for the Catalans, of which only one has come this season.
Thus, the Netherlands international’s future appears to be away from the Nou Camp, and reports suggest that the shot-stopper could be allowed to leave the club for just £9 million in the winter window.
And with Benitez’s Newcastle reportedly having kept tabs on the 28-year-old in the past, he could be the man to bolster the goalkeeping ranks at St James’ Park.
Landlord’s verdict: The goalkeeping department was one area that Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez was seeking to improve over the summer, with Pepe Reina one man linked with the Magpies.
And although Rob Elliot has done well in the Premier League so far, news that Barcelona’s Jasper Cillessen could be available for just £9 million is likely to intrigue the Spaniard.
The Netherlands international is a very adept shot-stopper but is unlikely to dispose Marc-Ander ter Stegen as the number one at the Nou Camp, thus possibly opening the door for Newcastle to land a goalkeeper they have kept a close eye on for a while in the coming transfer windows.
