The Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will make a handful of quality additions this summer to improve their squad and convince Wilfried Zaha to remain at Selhurst Park.
If reports over the last 6 months are to be believed then it appears Tottenham Hotspur are one of many clubs interested in signing Zaha this summer after his impressive campaign with the Eagles. The 25-year-old played an instrumental role in Palace’s survival bid by scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists from 29 appearances, so Roy Hodgson will undoubtedly face a tough task in fending off interest from outside the club this summer.
However, according to a recent report from the Daily Mirror, Spurs have turned their attention towards Xherdan Shaqiri who has a release clause of just £12 million following his relegation with Stoke City. The report claims that Southampton are also interested in signing the Switzerland international who is set to feature at the World Cup this summer, but Palace would be foolish not to join the race for his signature considering his level of quality.
Palace’s reliance on Zaha last season is evident through the frightening fact that the club failed to collect a single point from the 9 fixtures in which he missed through injury. Not only does the stat prove that keeping Zaha is Palace’s most vital summer task, but also that they must add further quality in attacking positions to ensure they avoid a relegation scrap next season.
With that in mind, Palace should join the race for Shaqiri, as his arrival would boost their chances of both steering clear of a relegation battle and convincing Zaha to remain at the club. The Ivory Coast international expressed his desire to remain at Selhurst Park earlier this summer, but if Hodgson fails to significantly bolster his options then the lure of Champions League football may prove too strong for Palace’s talisman to resist.
The situation is simple: Palace need to keep hold of Zaha to have any chance of surviving next season and signing new players will play a decisive role in that task, so the club must do everything they can to sign a quality midfielder who is bound to form a formidable understanding with Zaha next season.
Bringing Shaqiri to South London would also represent a double blow for Tottenham Hotspur who would miss out on their transfer target and simultaneously suffer a setback in their pursuit of Zaha following the proposed deal, so targeting the World Cup bound star represents something of a no-brainer for Hodgson and the Palace hierarchy.
